We’re So Close to Building a Great New Y! by Cate Mellen

The Y is committed to Carlisle. Since 1859, we’ve been in the heart of the community, accessible to all who want to grow stronger in spirit, mind and body. Today we serve more than 10,000 people each year in our downtown location and at our four program sites in the Greater Carlisle area. Portions of our facility date to 1899, with all of the problems that can come with an older building.

For several years now, our Board of Directors has grappled with the question of what to do with our aging facility. In 2015, we engaged an architectural consulting team which specializes in designing new YMCAs and repurposing older Ys like ours all around the country. They worked with our staff and Board to help come up with a design concept that maximizes our available space, and gave the Board the confidence to move forward with the project.

This project will transform our YMCA, replacing outdated and aging spaces with welcoming and energy-efficient program areas for all ages. Our design concept includes an indoor splash pad adjacent to our swimming pool; an expanded kid zone and child watch space; a multi-purpose, auxiliary gym space for activities like Pickle Ball, sports clinics and youth activities that currently all share time in our busy gymnasium; a family locker room or family changing areas to provide expanded access for all users; community rooms and gathering spaces, including a teaching kitchen; and an expanded fitness center that will be more than double the size of our current space. With this we also will have a significant increase in off-street parking, and we will be updating other areas of the building not currently slated for renovation. We want to make sure the Y remains a strong and vibrant institution not just for you and your family, but for generations to come.

But a project like this is expensive, and we needed to make sure that it was the right fit for our community at this time. And so a dedicated team of volunteers has been quietly working behind the scenes for two years to help us advocate for the Y and to raise the necessary funds.

We’re so close to our goal of raising $8.5 million for this exciting project. To date we have raised over $6.6 million from local corporations, foundations, government grants and generous individuals who want to invest in building a better community. We are grateful to all of our generous supporters who have gotten us this far, but we still have a way to go before we reach the finish line.

We need your help. Please consider investing in your community by making a contribution to this once-in-a-generation project. Every donation will make a big difference to our campaign success.
