Share the Health Member Referral Program

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2017 SPECIAL: We are waiving the requirement that all new members have not been a member of the Carlisle Family YMCA in the past 12 months. Beginning January 1, 2018 that rule will go into effect.

Your goal to live a healthier, more active life was set by you, not anyone else — but, that doesn’t mean you’re in it alone, either.

When you and your friend commit to the Y together, you both enjoy an exclusive 20% membership savings* off the standard adult or family membership rate each month. Y members may buddy with a non-member or two non-members may join together— either combination returns a 20% savings* for each of you on your Y membership!

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

I’M A Y MEMBER

Bring in a new Y member and both receive up to 20% savings on your adult or family membership as long as you both remain members of the Y.

I’M NOT A Y MEMBER

Find a friend that is a Y member and buddy-up OR find a friend that wants to join the Y and buddy-up – either way you both receive a 20% savings on your membership as long as you both remain members of the Y.

FOR ALL MEMBERS PARTICIPATING IN SHARE THE HEALTH

If one of you leaves the Y, the remaining member has 30 days to find a new non-member in order to keep the Share the Health rate. Unfortunately, we are not able to issue refunds. Some restrictions may apply.

  • Current Financial Assistance, Youth, Teen and Child Care members can refer new members who will receive the discount, but will not get the discount themselves unless they convert to a full-pay membership.
  • The Share the Health rate applies only to membership fees, and not to additional fees or program registration fees.
  • A non-member is defined as a person who has not been a member of the Carlisle Family YMCA for 12 consecutive months prior to joining to benefit from this special rate.

(Breast)Stroke for a Cure

Count the laps you swim and minutes you exercise in the pool from October 15-21 and make a donation to help find a cure for breast cancer. One-hundred percent of your donation will be given to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Make a commitment to donate any amount per lap swam and/or per minute exercised in the pool.
  2. Swim/exercise as much as you can from Oct. 15-21, 2017.
  3. Tally your total number of laps and/or minutes and multiply by the amount(s) you committed to give.
  4. Make a donation directly to the PA Breast Cancer
  5. Coalition by visiting www.pabreastcancer.org and clicking the pink “Donate” tab. Be sure to check that your donation is for a specific event and put the Carlisle Family YMCA as the title of the event so they can track the donation to the (Breast)Stroke for the Cure challenge and we can get a grand total for everyone who contributed. If you would prefer to mail a check, make your check payable to PA Breast Cancer Coalition and mail it to: PA Breast Cancer Coalition, 2397 Quentin Road, Suite B, Lebanon PA 17042.

Water Fitness Class Schedule

Water fitness is an ideal form of exercise for all ages and utilizes the buoyant qualities of water to increase physical strength and endurance without putting stress and strain on your joints. You do not need to register ahead of time. Just show up ready for a great workout! Members age 13 and up can take any of our water exercise classes. Here is a sampling of our current classes:

  • Aqua Jogging - Incorporate aqua jogging to music as well as some interval training. Run in the water and put less stress on your joints.
  • Aquacize - Shallow water exercise. No swimming ability required.
  • Aqua Zumba® - Aqua Zumba uses mostly Latin music rhythms such as meringue, cumbia and salsa but can also use a variety of upbeat tempos as found in swing or country music. The movements will be slower than in a class you would do on land, yet they can be just as intense due to the water’s resistance.
  • Deep H20 - This class will challenge all fitness levels while being easy on the joints. Resistive equipment is used to increase intensity. Confidence in deep water is strongly suggested. Flotation belts are available.
  • Aqua Mix - These weekend classes are taught by 2 different instructors who will bring their own flavor to the class.
  • Wet ‘N Wild - High energy class for total body conditioning! Primarily uses shallow water.
  • Arthritis Water Exercise - This class will help you gain range of motion in your joints as well as build strength in all major muscle groups. Some cardiovascular conditioning included. This class is open to non-members for a fee. A doctor release form is required for non-members

FAQ

What is the purpose of the Pennsylvania YMCAs Membership Reciprocity Program?

We encourage members to utilize the Y as often as they can in order to meet their health and wellness goals. Sometimes it is more convenient to use a Y in a different location when traveling, near a workplace or in another region. This program allows active, full facility/full privilege members this flexibility and also increases the value of a Y membership.

Who is eligible to participate in the program?

The program is for active full facility/full privilege Y members whose home Y participates in the program and is located in Pennsylvania. In order to participate, Y members must maintain an active full facility/full privilege membership at their home Y. Reciprocal membership privileges can be revoked for abuse or behavioral issues.

Is there a fee to participate?

No, this program is offered as a benefit for all active full facility/full privilege members. All the member must do is maintain an active membership at their home Y.

Does this replace the AWAY (Always Welcome at the YMCA) program?

No, the AWAY program still exists. Visitors from states outside Pennsylvania should use the AWAY program. Pennsylvania Y members may use the AWAY program when visiting a Y outside of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Y members visiting a Y in Pennsylvania should use the reciprocity program with participating Ys as there is no additional fee, which might not be the case with the AWAY program.

Are all Ys in Pennsylvania participating in the reciprocity program?

Over 80% of Pennsylvania Ys have chosen to participate in the reciprocity program. We hope the Ys currently not participating might choose to do so soon. Visit http://psays.com/resources/membership-reciprocity/ for a list of all participating Ys.

How do members find out about restrictions at other Ys?

Each Y is required to outline any program participation restrictions on their website. Go to the website of the Y you intend to use, or to call the Y, prior to visiting.

What do reciprocal members need to show when visiting another Y?

Reciprocal members should present their YMCA membership card and a current photo ID.

Should reciprocal members receive any documentation when they arrive at another Y?

All reciprocal members should receive a handout listing any restrictions of the Y they are visiting.

Do reciprocal members need to sign anything?

Yes, all reciprocal members visiting the Carlisle Family YMCA must sign our PA Reciprocity Waiver upon their first visit. You can print the waiver below, fill it out and bring it with you on your first visit to speed up the check-in process.

Can reciprocal members register for fee-based programs at the Carlisle Family YMCA?

Reciprocal members are considered non-members of the Carlisle Family YMCA and may register for programs following the same procedure and fee schedule as any other non-member. One exception is that reciprocal members can pay the drop-in rate for TRX®, CrossFit or Y-Fit classes, which normally are not available to non-members. However, reciprocal members may not sign up for the FFC Unlimited Monthly Package.

What areas of the Carlisle Family YMCA may reciprocal members use?

Reciprocal members are able to utilize all areas of the Carlisle Family YMCA that are available to and included in facility membership. This includes all free group land and water fitness classes.

Can reciprocal members bring guests into a Y other than their home Y?

Reciprocal members are not entitled to bring guests to any Y other than their home Y.

Can members who use a Y through a group membership participate in the reciprocity program?

Special memberships established by any local Y with group homes, social service agencies or other groups/nonprofit organizations are not eligible for the PA Y reciprocity program.

Are there any restrictions on the number of visits reciprocal members can have at a visiting Y each month?

Participating Ys will monitor usage in an effort to ensure members are not “price shopping” for the lowest Y membership cost. Reciprocal members are expected use their home branch at least 50% of the time. Members who abuse or overuse the system will be individually addressed. They may be asked to transfer their membership if they continue to use the visiting Y more than their home Y. Any member who continues to abuse the program could have their reciprocity privileges revoked.

What if a reciprocal member truly uses two Ys at a similar frequency?

If a reciprocal member is using two Ys at the same frequency on a regular basis, we recommend the member should belong to the Y in the community in which they live.

What about behavior issues?

Reciprocal members must abide by each Y’s code of conduct at all times. If any reciprocal member violates any policies or code of conduct of a visiting Y at any time, the visiting Y can deny access to that member.

Annual Campaign

At the Y no child, family or adult is turned away for membership or program participation. We recognize that for communities to succeed, everyone must be given the opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected and secure. We can't do this alone!

Last year financial assistance was provided to 1,251 people
totaling $236,934. This is made possible through donations to our Annual Campaign and the support of the United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County. Scholarships are not funded through membership fees, which makes the success of our Annual Campaign vital to our community-strengthening efforts.

We would like to thank everyone who already contributed to the campaign in 2017. We raised $xxx, xxx, falling short of our goal of $100,000. But there is still time to donate. Please contact Cate Mellen if you still would like to make a donation to the 2017 campaign. In partnership with the Y, you can feel confident your contribution is making a meaningful and lasting impact and to move people forward.

We are very pleased to have M&T Bank as our 2017 Annual Campaign Community Partner. M&T Bank has generously donated $15,000 to the Annual Campaign. In addition to the monetary donation, members of the bank’s management team volunteered their time to help raise campaign funds. Their generous donation will help subsidize youth programs and provide membership and program scholarships to those in need. Thank you!

World Service Campaign

In many communities around the world, the Y is the only place where a child can access a library, a teen can learn about HIV / AIDS prevention or a family can break the cycle of poverty because of a Y job training program. Every day, Ys in 119 countries help more than 45 million people reach their full potential for a better future.

Each year, the Y’s World Service Campaign directly impacts more than a million people worldwide by funding programs focused in six areas: Strengthening YMCA Movements; Health Education; Youth Leadership and Service-Learning; Employment and Vocational Training; Recreation, Camping and the Arts; and Education and Technology.

Because Ys focus on the most critical issues impacting their communities and at least 85 cents of every dollar contributed to the World Service Campaign directly supports Y initiatives, your gift will help to change lives.

How do I register for a program?

We have transitioned to all online program registration. You can register for programs in a couple of different ways:

            1. Find the program for which you want to register by using the navigation menu (Youth Development, Healthy Living, Social Responsibility) OR just search for the name of the program in the search bar. If you use quotation marks around your search term, that will help narrow the choices. Once you are on the page for your selected program, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the blue “Register” button. This will take you directly to the program’s registration page in our online program registration system.
            2. If you know the name of the program and would like to go directly to our online program registration site, just click the orange “Programs” button. Enter the name of the program in the search bar to find programs that are open for registration.

Once on the online registration site, select the program for which you want to register and click the gray “register” button. This will take you to the login screen where you will see three rectangles.

            • If you already have registered for programs using our online system, just enter your e-mail address and password in the first rectangle.
            • If you are a current or past member, or if you have registered for programs in the past, but you haven't set up your online account, select the second rectangle to enable your online account. You can use your online account to register for classes, programs and events.
            • If you've never been a member or enrolled in any of our programs or classes, select the third rectangle to create an online account. You can use your online account to register for classes, programs and events.

Once signed in, just follow the on-screen prompts to register for programs.

How do I sign up for a membership?

You can begin the membership process on our website or by stopping by the Welcome Center at the Y. To start the process on the website, just click on the orange “Join” button View our membership categories and rates by clicking the “View Rates” option on the page. Once you are ready to start the membership process, click on the “Join Now” option. Fill out the form with as much information as possible and hit “Save.” This information will be sent to our Member Service Representatives to enter into our membership system as a starting point for your membership. We will need you to stop by the Y to set up your payment method and take photos to keep on file. When you get to the Y, just let the Member Service Representative working at the Welcome Center know that you registered online.

Does the Y offer membership and/or program scholarships?

We believe everyone deserves a Y, so the Carlisle Family YMCA offers financial assistance to individuals and families who might otherwise not be able to afford membership or program fees. Ask a staff member about our Member Connection program. It’s easy to apply and the Y does everything it can to make the Y a place for all.

            How do I donate?

The Carlisle Family YMCA’s Annual Strong Kids Campaign is our largest fund-raising drive. The campaign officially runs each year from March to May, but donations are accepted all year long. You can donate in one of two ways:

            • Go to our website and click the orange “Donate” button. Then click the “Donate Money” option on the page. This will take you directly to our online donation site. If you have ever registered for a program or event through the Y, you will use the same log-in information that you would to register online. If you do not have an account, just click “Continue without signing in” and follow the on-screen prompts.
            • If you would prefer to write a check, you can make it payable to “Carlisle Family YMCA” and either drop it off or mail it to the Y at Carlisle Family YMCA, 311 S. West St., Carlisle, PA 17013. Please just mark it to the attention of Cate Mellen.

            Disaster Response

Part of our Y community was shaken from the natural disaster in Haiti. The Y facility in Port-au-Prince was destroyed and the facilities outside of town were used as shelters. Yet, only days after the earthquake, a Y delegation was operating a food distribution initiative at the very site where the Y previously stood for 8 years running its programs and services to meet the needs of the community.

AWAKENHAITI is a grassroots, non-profit organization that started before the tragedy and, in turn, was well positioned to respond immediately to the tragedy and continue to serve local orphanages in a hands-on way.

AWAKENHAITI strives to be the hands and feet of Christ by serving those in need. There are so many needs in Haiti. However, this organization passionately talks of how the people of Haiti give back so much more than they receive. In support of their efforts, we provide various opportunities for our local Y community to play some small role in enhancing the lives of children in Haiti. This has included sending gently used soccer jerseys, sports balls and other equipment to these children through AWAKENHAITI. We are proud of this  partnership and are happy to be giving back to the global Y community.

For more information on AWAKENHAITI visit www.awakenhaiti.org.

The Carlisle Family YMCA provides Adventure Based Education for the Carlisle School District’s elementary, middle and high schools. This dynamic experiential learn curriculum offers youth the opportunity to grow by being placed into team-building, service and challenging activities. Classroom time provides each student the opportunity to set group and individual goals to work toward in order to chart their growth throughout the school year.

The Y partners with ResCare Inc, to provide a wrap around employment program for some of the students enrolled in the ABE Program.

            The Mentoring Project

The Mentoring Project (www.thementoringproject.org) seeks to respond to the American crisis of fatherlessness by inspiring and equipping faith communities to mentor fatherless youth. Through dynamic trainings, mentor recruitment and the creation of sustainable mentoring communities, TMP is rewriting the story of a generation. We can’t bring back all the fathers, but we can provide mentors to step in their place.

Area churches, local school districts, educational institutions and mentoring agencies have come together to address the growing issue of fatherlessness in our community with the Y serving as the hub.

Donald Miller, founder of The Mentoring Project, says, “[The story of the fatherless generation] does not have to be cyclical. It can end with fewer men in prison, less families abandoned and the fatherless being cared for by positive role models who believe...that we can choose to live a better story.”

            How Can You Be Involved?

            • Refer a youth, typically a boy between the ages of 7-14 without a father in the home, to be mentored. Fatherless girls are also matched with women and boys/girls can be matched with families.
            • Learn more about what a TMP mentor looks like and if you might be a fit to potentially change a child’s life through mentoring.
            • Get your church involved. Each faith community will have a church liaison who will seek mentors in the church and support mentors in matches.

In Cumberland County children are on a waiting list for mentors. They are mostly fatherless boys who have been signed up for mentors by their mothers. Statistics tells us these fatherless youth are the most at-risk to become pregnant, use drugs, be incarcerated, drop out of school or commit suicide. Will you help us end the waiting list?

This program is led in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region.
